MY THOUGHTS
This book caught my attention immediately. The premise has a murdered royal heir, a ghostly enemy prince, forbidden necromancy, and a goddess who seems suspiciously uninterested in solving a murder.
Alexandra Kennington’s Drown the Bones takes a familiar romantasy setup where two enemies are forced to work together and gives it a wonderfully morbid twist. At the center of the story is a murder mystery wrapped in religious conflict, political tension, and a magic system built around the boundary between life and death.
Merridan is the younger twin of the Rothian royal family, and she’s perfectly content being the spare. Her brother, Von, is destined for the throne, while Merridan has devoted herself to serving the Goddess. Her sacred responsibility is guiding the spirits of the dead from a holy lake into the Afterworld. Then Von is murdered.
Merridan immediately suspects the neighboring kingdom of Nova. The two kingdoms are divided by more than politics. Their religious beliefs and magical practices are fundamentally opposed. Rothia reveres its Goddess and the sacred passage of the dead, while Nova practices a form of magic involving necromancy that Rothians consider heretical.
Things get considerably more interesting when the Goddess herself puts a stop to the investigation into Von’s death. Why would a deity who supposedly represents everything Merridan believes in prevent her from discovering who murdered her brother?
Unwilling to accept that decision, Merridan commits an act of religious rebellion. She performs a forbidden Novian ritual, hoping to summon Von’s spirit and learn what happened; except she summons the wrong ghost, Phoenix Darragon, the crown prince of Nova, who was apparently murdered on the very same night as Von.
Phoenix offers Merridan a deal: help return him to Nova so he can be resurrected, and he’ll help uncover the truth about her brother’s murder. Unfortunately, investigating the deaths of two royal heirs also means confronting Phoenix’s secrets, the growing possibility of war, and everything Merridan has been taught about her Goddess.
I loved that this wound up being so much more than a typical woman easy. There’s a delicious enemies-to-lovers romance developing between a princess and a very inconvenient ghost, but what really catches my attention is the mystery underneath it. Two princes murdered on the same night. Rival kingdoms with incompatible religious beliefs. A goddess actively interfering with an investigation? There are so many opportunities for deception, political manipulation, and revelations that could completely change how Merridan understands her world.
As a recovering catholic, I was supposed at how much I enjoyed the religious element. Merridan isn’t simply questioning a government or a political system, she is potentially confronting the very deity she’s devoted her life to serving. That creates a much more personal conflict than the usual struggle between rival kingdoms. What happens when the source of your identity and purpose becomes the very thing standing between you and the truth?
There’s also something deliciously complicated about a story where death isn’t necessarily the end, but bringing someone back comes with consequences. The distinction between sacred magic and forbidden necromancy seems especially ripe for exploration. Who gets to decide which practices are holy and which are monstrous? And how much of that distinction depends on who’s holding the power?
The romance also had a very unique conflict because Merridan and Phoenix aren’t just political enemies; one of them is dead. Their partnership requires trust across religious, national, and supernatural boundaries, all while the attraction between them grows.
Give me a murder mystery with morally complicated gods, dangerous magic, a heroine forced to dismantle her own beliefs, and a ghost with secrets. I will enjoy exotic page.
