MY THOUGHTS (SPOILERS BELOW)
Some books are so good that finishing them feels like a loss*, and Vasmora* was one of those books for me. An easy five stars, and a phenomenal conclusion to a series I absolutely loved.
Keri Lake has created a world that is as beautiful as it is horrifying, filled with darkness, death, monsters, complicated loyalties, and characters who somehow manage to make you laugh and cry in the middle of all that misery.
The atmosphere has been one of my favorite things about this series from the beginning. It is deliciously dark, gothic, and unsettling. The mutant spider creatures were absolutely disgusting and genuinely terrifying. This book had the kind of nightmare fuel that makes you question why you enjoy reading things like this in the first place. I loved every minute of it.
What made this series exceptional for me was the character development. Watching Maevyth evolve from a seemingly helpless mortal into a goddess of death was incredibly satisfying. Her transformation felt earned, and I loved that becoming powerful didn’t mean losing everything that made her human. She became a genuinely formidable character, and I was completely invested in her journey.
Zevander will forever live as one of my favorite book boyfriends. His love for Maevyth could so easily have fallen into the familiar traps of romantasy, where declarations of eternal devotion sometimes substitute for actual relationship development. Instead, their connection felt authentic. It was passionate without being cheesy, intense without feeling forced, and grounded in everything they had endured together.
I don’t want to spoil anything, but the way Branimir’s story unfolded was beautifully tragic. His character, along with the other twists and redemption arcs woven throughout the book, added an emotional complexity that elevated the story beyond a simple battle between good and evil. I love characters who challenge our assumptions about who deserves sympathy, forgiveness, or redemption, and this book gave me plenty to think about.
Raivox, the sisters, and that wonderful collection of misfit fighters and mages brought so much personality and heart to an otherwise brutal world. Their relationships, humor, and loyalty gave the darkness something meaningful to contrast against. I found myself laughing in one chapter and crying in another, which is exactly the kind of emotional investment I want from a story.
People are going to be divided over that ending. Lordy. I know ambiguous endings aren’t for everyone, but I absolutely loved it. Rather than neatly explaining away every uncertainty, Keri Lake left us questioning the very nature of what we’d experienced. For me, that wasn’t an unsatisfying ending; it was a brilliant one. I love books that trust readers to sit with uncertainty, to question what they think they know, and to keep turning a story over in their minds long after the final page.
Vasmora gave me incredible atmosphere, genuinely disturbing horror, an unforgettable cast, a romance I believed in, and a story that made me feel just about everything.
Five stars for the book. Five stars for the series. Five stars for an ending I will be thinking about for years to come.
